English Vinglish is a 2012 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Gauri Shinde. The movie is based on the English language-learning difficulties experienced by Mrs. Bhoolabhai (Swati Bhembre) after she moves to Mumbai, India.[1] It stars Sridevi in dual roles; one as Bhoolabhai's daughter Shalini, who learns English at school and also has an American boyfriend named Nick (Rizwan Manji), and the other as Bhoolabhai herself in all her struggles with speaking in English following her move to Mumbai. The movie follows the difficulties faced by Mrs. Bhoolabhai, a middle-class Maharashtrian woman from a small village near Mumbai, in adjusting to city life and learning English. Living in Mumbai with her husband, who works as a film distributor, she has two daughters: Shalini (Sridevi) and Rani (Anjana Sukhani). Shalini is engaged to her cousin Govind (Atul Kulkarni), who has a job in the same company as her. Her younger sister Rani is a school drop out and doesn't help much around the house. Shalini's biggest ambition is to get a good job and move abroad with her husband. After Shalini finishes work, she often meets up with Nick (Rizwan Manji), an American whom she had initially met whilst holidaying in Goa. They spend time together at cafes and try to improve their English by conversing in it. She doesn't realise that Nick has fallen in love with her, feeling he will never be able to win her over due to the vast cultural differences between them. When a relative of a potential employee for Shalini recommends a new English teacher for the Bhoolabhais, Shalini asks if she can accompany her mother, which she is allowed to do. There she introduces her to Subhash (Arjun Kapoor) whom she has selected. Shalini gets the impression that her mother doesn't like Subhash, because he is poor and yet educated, while all the other English teachers are rich and uneducated. They spend time together to get Bhoolabhai accustomed to speaking in English. She also calls her to help with chores at home, which makes Govind very unhappy, while Shalini continues seeing Nick while keeping up the pretence that he is just one of her friends. Nick dumps her when he realises that she does not love him back. Shalini continues to spend time with Subhash, even after her mother urges her to stop seeing him because he is poor. After one of their lessons, they have a conversation in which Bhoolabhai tries to explain what she likes about Subhash. She begins by saying that he makes her feel light and free, but she stops herself before she can say "young". When Shalini goes home, she realises that currently her mother feels old and tired all the time and regrets that she kept going out with Subhash instead of spending more time at home with her. One day Shalini skips an important conference call in order to meet Nick who is visiting India.
